Creating "Starlight Sanctuary" was an unforgettable experience, commissioned by Amy B. from Kansas, USA, as a way to capture the essence of her holiday home nestled in the peaceful mountains of Colorado. The reference photo she provided of the house at night was very dark, which posed an interesting challenge. To bring out the architectural features of the home without losing the calm, night-time atmosphere, I used the daytime photo of the house to guide me.
Finding that balance—highlighting just enough of the house while ensuring the lighted areas remained the focal point—was key. I carefully added the features that would still preserve the serene night ambiance, allowing the glowing lights to stand out. It was important not to let the added details distract from the tranquility that Amy wanted to feel each time she looked at the painting.
My favorite part of this piece was working on the sky. The deep, starry night stretching above felt like the perfect finishing touch, radiating a sense of stillness and peace. I'm happy that the painting successfully captured the tranquility and beauty of Amy's cherished getaway.
